Song of the Week

Fuji Vibe
by Asake

It's always a good time to listen to Asake.

Although the song was at its peak towards the end of last year, I always get emotional when I hear Afrobeats artists incorporate traditional Yoruba sounds into their music.

Although Afrobeats has seen massive global success in the past 6 years, the genre remained deeply personal to many Nigerians. Before it grew, it was ours. And if you know anything about Nigerians, we will gladly share while letting you know that this thing originated from us.

Despite that enriching international exchange, I recognized that Afrobeats employed a variety of sounds. Many of the songs that resonated with the rest of the world didn't sound so 'local'.

A few years ago, I remember having a conversation with Nigerians who discounted an Afrobeats artist because he only spoke Yoruba.

Look at us now...proudly sharing Fuji music to an audience who doesn't need to understand to love it.

Big up, Asake! I've always appreciated his unapogetic approach to music.

His authenticity forces us to be just as authentic.
